Dispatches from Asteroid Hopkins

the kindred

A member of the rehab group had her last day. We will stay in contact through the group chat we opened and we exchanged phone numbers, nonetheless, i felt sad. While we spent our break in the recuperation room, she gave me a present, a small clover she crocheted. I was in shambles over that gesture, amidst all the unpleasantness that the patients are confronted every day, these acts of kindness among the kindred hit extra hard. It is hard to acknowledge receiving such gestures of sympathy through the fog of hurt … writing this makes me tear up. She also told me something i think was, that my presence made the recuperation room bearable for her…

Kirby was in a tricky mood. He was pumped to do some of his summer homework after a round of Donkey Kong Bananza, and then he crashed hard. We spent three hours for ten minutes of actual homework, arguing, keeping to ourselves in different areas of the flat.
Later in the summer, we have a few cognitive tests. Perhaps he inherited much more of my damaged DNA than we assumed.
