Dispatches from Asteroid Hopkins

life changing

Over the last couple of days, something so far unheard has entered the daily life of my family: a sound that reminds me of a Nintendo Game and Watch1 or Tiger Electronics handheld games2 — Game and Watch were called Tricotronic here in austria, i always thought it's »Trick und Tronic«, which i thought should emphasize that it is an electronic game, comprised of minimalist animation due to the LCD display; we called animated features »Trickfilm« back then, which i think is a reference to watching a succession of static pictures, tricking us into believing that the drawings are alive.
Anyway; at various times of the day, there is this short sound that i've been trained to associate with being a call for help; changing the batteries is the first thing that came to mind. So far we all have heard it, while not being able to find the source. Perhaps it's one of the Tamagotchi that Kirby and the Wife brought home from a trip a few years ago.

When i'm working at a certain site, i pass by a save spot for drug addicts, among whose charges i thought to have spotted a former co-worker. He had a rough time, which impacted work beyond what they already tolerated. I asked at work, if anybody had heard from him, and got confirmed that he's back on a substitute program.
His sacking is something i still complain about to our union rep.. There is a program in place at our company, that enables people with an addiction, to get the help they need. When one of our many alcoholics—whose numbers dwindled due to people leaving and retiring—needed aid, they got all the help money could buy. Guess because alcoholism is seen as a lifestyle. My complaining won't change anything about the former co-workers life tough…

Saw a bumblebee flying its rounds around the greener areas of the neighbourhood, and some bees walking seemingly aimless on the pavement. Wonder how pissed they'll be when the snow comes back on the weekend.
